Mughal road to reopen today, Kashmir highway through for one-way only

Srinagar: The historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region is likely to reopen tomorrow after remaining closed for four months while  only one-way traffic continued on Srinagar-Jammu national highway despite rain.

Meanwhile, dozens of far flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off from their respective district headquarters due to accumulation of snow since January this year.

Snow clearance operation on 84-km-long Mughal road, which is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway, has been completed, officials told UNI.

If there is no fresh snowfall or avalanches, the road is likely to reopen tomorrow for only one-way, they said adding both way traffic will be allowed only after further road improvement and clearance of snow on both sides.

Vehicles had to cross through five to seven feet of snow walls on both sides, they said adding traffic will be allowed to ply only between 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs. Night traffic on the road will not be allowed at any cost as a precautionary measure, the officials said.

Only one-way traffic continued on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police official told UNI adding today traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu.

No traffic will be allowed from opposite direction, he said adding there was rain on this side of the Jawahar tunnel though weather was dry on the other side.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, has been working to restore two-way traffic. Traffic on the highway was frequently disrupted due to first heavy snowfall on January 6. However, since then only one-way traffic is allowed on the highway.
