Guns silent on LoC, people evacuated to safer places pray for peace

Srinagar: Guns are silent since Saturday evening on the Line of Control (LoC) where hundreds of residents of affected villages in north Kashmir were evacuated to safer places after Pakistani shells landed there, damaging several houses and a mosque during the past few days.

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was martyred when he was hit by a sniper rifle fire by Pakistani troops fired from across the LoC in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara while three persons, including a woman, were injured in Uri sector last week.

Meanwhile, hundreds of residents of affected areas, who have been evacuated to safer places in Uri sector, are praying for peace and demanded construction of bunkers.

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling and firing from across the LoC in Uri and Tangdhar sectors in north Kashmir.

Local said that it was the heaviest shelling by Pak troops since ceasefire agreed by India and Pakistan in 2003 on LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid said that due to firing and shelling in Uri sector, hundreds of people were shifted to safer areas and District Administration, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Army are taking care of them (evacuated people).

In a tweet Dr Vaid said “ Firing/ shelling in Uri area leading to shifting of hundreds of people to safer areas. District Administration/ CAPF/ Army taking care of them”.

A police spokesman said that around 700 people, including women and children besides elderly persons were evacuated from  Silikote, Churnada,Tulawari and  villages affected to safe places. Food, bedding, medical and sanitation facilities are being provided in camp.

After almost daily ceasefire violation by Pak troops on the LoC and International Border (IB) in Jammu region, Pakistan has now opened new front in Kashmir valley for the past one week, targeting forward posts and civilian areas in Uri, Tangdhar and Karnah sectors. People in these areas are praying for peace between India and Pakistan. We were living a peaceful life after 2003 ceasefire between the two countries though there were few incidents of firing between the troops from both sides, the residents at Tangdhar said. We have lost several lives and scores become handicapped due to Pak shelling before the ceasefire, they said.

Former minister and senior Congress leader Taj Mohiuddin said there was very tense situation in the villages near LoC in Uri sector due to ceasefire violation by Pak troops. He demanded construction of bunkers so that in case of shelling people could take shelter. Government should immediately make proper arrangements for stay and ration for the affected people who have migrated from LoC, he said adding people have no money after their migration.

The residents of border area of Tanghdar alleged that people of the area were left at the mercy of God. The bunkers constructed before about two decades have been damaged.

They demanded immediate resumption of talks between India and Pakistan to resolve their all issues so that guns on the LoC are silent.
