Shortage of essential commodities adversely affects life in Kargil

Zoji-la pass likely to open in a week

Kargil: In a wake of closer of Srinagar Kargil National highway at Zojilla pass due to heavy snow,  people in Kargil are facing acute shortage of essential commodities such as vegetable, eggs, fruits etc. The shortage of essential commodities are adversely affecting the the life.

A local resident Mohammad Ali  media, “They are half dead for six months and there is nobody is one to listen to the grievances of the people of Kargil.”

He further said, “We have an airport but have no commercial flight and solely depend on India Air Force, and when they operate only when they wish.”

Another resident Mohammad Jaffer said that our leaders are failed to take up the matter with the higher authorities so that we are deprived from civil flight.

A Kashmiri merchant in Kargil Bazaar told that the customers went back empty handed from my shop as my stock has ended.

Meanwhile, the main Sabzi Mandi is closed since December 2015 after Zojila was closed and people are deprived of fresh vegetable and fruits in Kargil from the past five months.

It’s also pertinent to mention here that the snow clearance and traffic towards Ladakh experiences hurdles due to dual control of administrations on Zojila pass.

The half of the portion of Zojial pass falls in the purview of Ganderbal Administration while half falls under Kargil administration.

Most of the time the passengers suffer due to lack of co-ordination between the Ganderbal and Kargil administrations. The local as well as non-local taxi drivers said they often face terrible situation in Sonamarg and Drass.

Morover sources said that Snow on National Highway between Srinagar –Kargil at Zojilla Pass will open within the week .
