Stalin, Kanimozhi, Thiruma, DMK cadres arrested for holding protests on Sterlite issue

Chennai, May 25 : Scores of DMK workers, including Working President and Opposition leader M K Stalin, DMK Rajya Sabha MP Ms Kanimozhi and party functionaries, were arrested across Tamil Nadu for staging a protest demonstration on the Sterlite issue.
As part of the bandh called by the DMK-all party combine, the party cadres along with leaders of friendly parties staged protests condemning the police firing on ant-sterlite protestors, resignation of Chief Minister
Edappadi K Palaniswami owning moral responsbility for the Tuticorin incidents and the immediate closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter plant.
Mr Stalin, who solemnised the wedding of a DMK worker at Acharapakkam, about 100 km from here, was arrested at Madurantakam for staging a protest demonstration and road roko agitation.
Hundreds of DMK cadres, including the newly wedded couple, participated in the agitation.
DMK cadres and members of friendly parties also staged agitations in various parts of Chennai city as part of the bandh, affecting free flow of traffic in several areas.
While Kanimozhi, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader M H Jawahirullah were arrested when they staged a demonstration and attempted to take out a march to the Egmore Railway
station for blocking trains, DMK MLA Ma Subramanian along with party workers were arrested for staging a road blockade agitation near Panagal Maaligai in Saidapet area.
Members of CPI(M) were arrested for staging agitations in the Party’s corner area.
Elsewhere in the state, similar agitations were held on the Sterlite issue.
Members of various students organisations, including those belonging to the Democratic Youth Federation of India, courted arrested for staging protest demonstrations.
The opposition all party combination of nine parties, led by the DMK, including its allies the Congress and IUML, and friendly parties like the MDMK, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), Dravidar Kazhagam and Manithaneya Makkal
Katchi, had initially staged protest demonstrations in front of all district headquarters as part of the state-wide bandh called to condemn the police firing on anti-sterlite protestors at Tuticorin on Tuesday that claimed 13 lives.
