Media fraternity didn’t celebrate World Press Freedom Day in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The world Press Freedom day was not celebrated by Jammu Kashmir Press Association (JKPA) today, citing alleged hostile attitude of the state Information Department to muzzle the press and deprive people working in media houses of their bread and butter.

The Press Association has been celebrating World Press Freedom Day on 3rd of May every year to express solidarity with the journalists worldwide.

Pertinently 11 journalists have been killed during the decades long turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir. The families of these journalists were left at God’ mercy.

The celebration of the day is meant to apprise the world community about the plight of media fraternity and to remind the governments about their commitment to ensure safety and security of the media fraternity.

In Kashmir the attack on journalists by the security forces and protesters continues unabated. The plight of journalists in Kashmir valley has left no room for celebration of press freedom.
