Srinagar-Jammu highway reopens after daylong closure
Srinagar, June 30 : Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was restored on Saturday after remaining suspended for a day due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by heavy rains.
‘We have allowed fresh traffic on the highway this morning,’ a traffic police official told UNI.
While light vehicles will ply from both sides, heavy vehicles are allowed from Srinagar to Jammu only.
Vehicles carrying Armanath pilgrims will be allowed from both sides, he said.
The road was closed early yesterday morning due to landslides and shooting stones at several places in Ramban and Ramsu area. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men and put through the highway this morning.
All the vehicles, stranded on the highway have been cleared and fresh traffic was allowed this morning, he said, adding that light vehicles will ply from both Srinagar and Jammu. However, heavy vehicles will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu on Saturday, he said.
The national highway, linking Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region are through for traffic.
