Water level receding, still above danger mark in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jul 1 : With considerable improvement in the weather, the water level in river Jehlum and it’s tributaries has started receding though it was still above danger mark at several places in the Kashmir valley, where some areas were submerged after breaches in embankments of water bodies.
Director Met Sonam Lotus said on Sunday that the weather will improve though there is chance of light rain today also. However, he said, there could be more rain from Monday evening till July 4 though the intensity of it will not be so severe as was witnessed during the past few days, he said adding there is no need of panic.
The water level in Jehlum has started receding in the south and central Kashmir though it was increasing in the down stream in north, a Flood Control Room (FCR) official told UNI.
He said the water level at Sangam in south Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, was 19.23 feet this morning against over 23 feet recorded yesterday. Similarly at Ram Munshi Bagh the water level was 20.13 feet against about 21 feet which was above danger mark.
However, he said the water level at Asham in north Kashmir district of Bandipora has witnessed an increase during the past 24 hours. Against 7 feet early yesterday it was 13.25 feet there this morning.
Similarly water level in other water bodies in south and central Kashmir has also started going down since last night after rain finally stopped since yesterday afternoon.
However, flood water entered dozens of areas in Badgam and Srinagar due to breach in bunds of water bodies.

Meanwhile, the Government has asked the people not to panic as all precautionary measures have been taken in Kashmir, where 14 Emergency Centres have been set up in Srinagar and Pampore in case any eviction is required from vulnerable and flood prone areas.
