Another jolt for PDP, leader joins Panthers
Jammu: In the run-up to the urban local bodies and panchayat elections in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday suffered another setback when one of its senior leaders and chairman of ex-servicemen wing Anil Gour resigned from the party.
It followed the decision of four Jammu-based second-rung PDP leaders who had resigned following the party’s move to boycott the municipal and panchayat elections in the state.
After resigning from the PDP along with his supporters, Gour joined the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) in the presence of its leader Harsh Dev Singh.
Gour said the unnecessary creation of tension among various communities and regions of Jammu by the PDP leaders from Kashmir was the major reason for him to leave the party.
“It was being felt that for the past two years that unnecessary tension was being created among various communities and regions of Jammu that led to a lot of mistrust among the public. Not only were the people being divided on community and religious lines, the Jammu region was also being bifurcated on geographical lines. This led to mistrust between the people of the regions,” he said.
The PDP chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had already announced the decision to boycott the elections in the state, saying, “her party would go to any extent to protect Article 35A”.
On September 18, four PDP leaders, who had been working to start their political career from the municipalities or panchayats, quit the party after it decided to stay away from the elections.
Gandhi Nagar zone president of the PDP Nitish Mahajan along with Sunny Sangral, Raj Kumar Lalotra and Sachin Kumar have left the party.
