Srinagar, Jan 05 : The runway at Srinagar airport has been cleared for the take off of some flights which were halted due to the overnight snowfall.
Officials in Beacon said that about one feet of snow had accumulated on the airport runway due to which flights were halted.
Beacon officials said that its team through their strenuous efforts ensured zero accumulation on the main runway.
“The clearance of snow from the civil airport was challenging as the safety of the 5 flights that were halted at the airport in the day was also to be maintained,” Beacon officials said.
They said as the snowfall started, Beacon authorities showing swift action, took over the control of the Srinagar airport to undertake snow clearance operations.
Srinagar received its first snowfall of the new year on Friday afternoon, ending the dry spell of over two months, after the sudden and heavy snowfall in November last year.
However, the snow also brought some bad news for the air commuters as the air traffic at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar was hit due to the continuous snowfall and poor visibility.
“The snow clearance was started immediately by Beacon men and machineries led by Capt Kaushal Sharma of 122 RCC under the able leadership of Col Mukesh Kumar, Commander, 32 BRTF, Beacon. A number of sophisticated equipments that included 3 Snow Sweepers, two of which were recently imported from Norway specially for the Srinagar Airport, 1 Snow Cutter and 4 Snow Ploughs were put into effective task battling the continuous snowfall throughout the night, and continued till today morning,” officials said.
Officials said that some flights are going to resume as the runway has been cleared off the snow.
