Govt shouldn’t have called Mehbooba Mufti Daddy’s girl: J&K DGP Dilbagh Singh

The territory’s administration explained its decision to book Mehbooba Mufti, 60, under the PSA by pointing to her “insidious machinantions” and “usurping profile and nature”. It said the “masses” called her “Daddy’s girl” — her father was the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, an ex-CM himself — and “Kota Rani”.

But Dilbagh Singh, Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, criticised this language when he said a “few words” in the dossier were “regrettable”.

“They should not have been used,” he told India Today TV.

Mehbooba’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, was far more critical. (She now operates her mother’s Twiiter account.)

Ms Mufti joined politics when most assumed Mufti sahab had faded into political oblivion. Both worked hard to make PDP a regional force. In a country where Shravan’s obedience to his parents is folklore, disgusting to see GOI turn ‘daddy’s girl’ into a slur & a criminal offence

“Our PM has deep affection for his mother,” Iltija Mufti said in a another Twitter post on February 10.

“Wondering if he knows his government has reduced ‘Daddy’s girl’ to a slur and cited it as a reason for slapping the PSA on Ms. Mufti. Deeply misogynistic and appalling.”

Former Union Minister P Chidambaram said the person who drafted the grounds of Mehbooba Mufti’s and Omar Abdullah’s detention deserved to be fired — and “sent to law school”.

‘OVERSIGHT BY SENIOR COPS’

The police official who prepared the dossier was pulled up, and an advisory was issued against the use of the kind of language it contained, India Today TV has learned.

“It is an oversight by senior cops, who should have gone through what was written. These are sensitive cases which need to be handled with care,” a senior officer said.

Several police officials admitted that the Jammu and Kashmir Police had been left red-faced by the document.

‘KASHMIR SITUATION NEEDS TO BE FURTHER STABILISED’

Eight Kashmir leaders have been booked under the PSA, the latest being Shah Faesal, a bureaucrat-turned-politician.

Most leaders have been released, but a few remain in detention as the situation needs to be further stabilised, Dilbagh Singh told India Today TV. (India Today)
