Fake TRP scam: Mumbai Police arrests Republic TV’s distribution head
Mumbai: A senior executive of the Republic TV channel was arrested on Tuesday by the Mumbai Police in connection with the alleged fake TRP (Television Rating Point) rigging scam.
Ghanshyam Singh, the distribution head of the channel, was picked up from his residence around 7.40 am.
Singh is also the Assistant Vice President of the Republic Media Network, an official from the Mumbai Crime Branch informed.
He was earlier questioned on multiple occasions by the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), the official said.
The latest arrest has taken the number of people held by the CIU of the crime branch in the case to 12. Earlier the police had arrested Ashish Abidur Chaudhary, Vishal Bhandari, Vinay Tripathi, former relationship manager at Hansa Umesha Mishra, Bompally Mistry alias Sanjiv Rao, Fakt Marathi TV channel’s owner Shirish Satish Pattanshetty and Box Cinema’s boss Narayan Nandkishor Sharma.
The probe into the TRP manipulation racket began after the research company Hansa, which installs and maintains barometers in the city on behalf of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), lodged a complaint that some of its former employees had gone rogue.
The complaint alleged that these employees had shared data with certain TV channels, who paid the selected households to watch their channels and boost ratings.
