Strong winds, hailstorm damages fruit crops in Kashmir

 

Srinagar:  Strong winds followed by hailstorm last night damaged fruit and vegetable crops, besides disrupting power supply in many areas of south Kashmir valley, particularly Kulgam and Shopian.

Meanwhile, some parts of this summer capital were also plunged into darkness since last night following damages to the transmission lines due to strong winds.

Officials told UNI that a number of trees and electric poles were uprooted due to strong winds in Srinagar city, besides many areas in south Kashmir.

However, they said authorities have pressed into service machines and men to remove uprooted trees and electric poles from the roads.

They said hailstorm has badly damaged fruit and vegetable crops in many areas in south Kashmir, particularly Kulgam and Shopian.

Though, they said was no loss of life or injury.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light rain or thundershowers may occur at isolated place during the next 24 hours in Kashmir valley.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature has witnessed considerable improvement from last few days in Kashmir though drizzles in the evenings have kept the weather pleasant. Even though some places in the valley witnessed slight dip in the night temperature due to rain, it still remained above normal.

People work up to a pleasant Tuesday morning in this summer capital though many places in the city plunged into darkness due to damage incurred by transmission lines due to strong winds last night. Against 13.2 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature in Srinagar was 12.5 degree, which is two notches above normal.

The mercury at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, Qazigund, gateway to the valley, tourist resort of Kokernag dipped and settled at 7 degree, 11 degree and 10.8 degree respectively.

However, the night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, and Kupwara in north Kashmir improved and settled at 7.3 degree and 11.5 degree respectively.
