Srinagar: A spontaneous shutdown was observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir over alleged custodial disappearance of a youth whom police maintains escaped from custody on May 1.
Official sources told GNS that scores of youth took to streets and staged protest against the alleged disappearance of Zubair Ahmad Turray alias Chota Geelani.
Soon shopkeepers pulled down their shutters while traffic thinned down. The youth later clashed with the police. The protesters demanded whereabouts of Turray who according to police escaped from a lockup at Police Post Keegam on May 1.
Turray’s family said that there are no whereabouts of their kin from last 10 days and had he escaped the custody he would have contacted them.
“Even if he would have joined any militant group still he would have contacted us. We have every apprehension that he has been subjected to custodial disappearance”, the family said.
Bashir Ahmad Turray, Father of Zubair told GNS that he met district SP, Deputy Commissioner and concerned SHO after his son’s detention order under PSA was quashed by the High Court.
“They told me that my son will be released in day or two but on May 1 i got a call from police and was told that my son escaped from their custody. It has been 10 days but there are no whereabouts about my son and police and administration is responsible for disappearance of my son”, Bashir said.
A police officer of the district told GNS that investigations have been launched to trace Zubair ‘who according to preliminary investigations’ suggest have joined Hizbul Mujahideen militant organisation. (GNS)
