Expecting woman was shifted from LD to SHMS hospitals to be used as specimen for PG students
Srinagar: Multiple enquiries have been initiated by Principal GMC Srinagar and Medical Superintendent Lal Ded Hospital after an unborn baby died in mother’s womb due to medical negligence here.
A pregnant women namely Asifa wife of Rouf Ahmad Bhat resident of Amda Kadal in Lal Bazar was admitted to LD Hospital under MRD No 4401 on May 18. The family of the woman said that her delivery was scheduled on May 27(Saturday). They said that several tests were conducted of Asifa and all of them were fine.
On Thursday, they said, the woman was shifted to SMHS Hospital by LD doctors. “At SMHS, she was taken into Ward at 10 pm where there was examination of PG students. It was anesthesia exam,” they said, adding that at 2pm, Asifa was discharged and sent back to LD in an ambulance.
“The ambulance driver drove fast. While we were on way to LD, Asifa developed pain and she started to bleed. After reaching LD, an emergency Ultra Sound test was conducted and baby was shown dead,” the family added.
The family immediately approached MS LD hospital seeking action into medical negligence. Acting on the complaint of the family, the MS ordered an inquiry into the matter. “The board of following doctors (Prof Nighat Firdous, Dr Masooma Rizvi and Dr Fara Shafi I/C DMS) is hereby constituted to ascertain and investigate the cause of IUD of a patient namely Asifa under MRD number 4401 Thursday unit. The committee will submit report within two days positively,” reads the enquiry order dated May 26.
Also, the GMC Principal Prof Samia Rasheed also ordered an inquiry into the matter. “A committee of following HODs and officers (HOD, Gynae & Obstetrics GMC, HOD Anesthesiology, Head Gynae & Obstetric [Thursday Unit], MS Superintendent SMHS and MS Superintendent LD Hospital). The committee will submit its detailed report and fix responsibility for taking further appropriate necessary action within a period of two days positively,” the order by GMC principal reads.
The family meanwhile has sought strict action against the doctors who are at fault so that no other mother loses her baby.
Meanwhile, Doctors Association Kashmir president Dr Nisar ul Hassan when contacted by news agency GNS said that pregnant women can be shifted for exams and this is not simply done. “This is very unfortunate. If this is there, a patient has been taken for PG exams this is unacceptable,” he said.
He said one hospital has one area another has another area. “Patient has to be sorted under one roof. A pregnant lady means two lives and you have to be more careful as you have to save two lives. This is highly condemnable,” he said.
Dr Nisar added: “You cannot jeopardize a patient because the PG students have to go for examinations. It is unacceptable and that too when she has been shifted without a doctor. How come a critical patient will be left the mercy of doctor? (GNS)
