Day chill intensifies due to overcast conditions
Srinagar: The 40-day-long Chilai Kalan, the harshest period of winter, passed almost dry with less snowfall in Kashmir valley, where night temperature further improved and settled several degrees above freezing point due to overcast conditions.
However, chill intensified in the valley during the day as mercury dipped due to cloudy skies though settled slightly above normal.
Chilai Kalan which commenced from December 21 last year ended without much snow or rain. However, it didn’t mark the end of chill in the valley as this period is followed by 20-day long ‘Chillai Khurd’ and a 10-day-long ‘Chilla Bachha’, when valley witness more snow.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light rain and snow would occur at isolated higher reaches in the state during the next 24 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 15 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury surged 5 degree from Tuesday and settled at minus 7.1 degree.
He said skies will be generally cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 5 degree and minus 11 degree, respectively.
After witnessing further improvement in the night temperature, people in the summer capital, Srinagar, woke up to a cloudy and chilly Wednesday morning. Against minus 2.2 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature at Srinagar was 3.5 degree, several degrees above normal. However, the chill during the day continued in the summer capital due to overcast conditions coupled with ice cold winds.
He said there is possibility of light rain or snow during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 7 degree and 2 degree, respectively.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh snowfall late last night, resulting in further improvement in the night temperature. Against minus 4.6 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature at the ski resort was minus 3.6 degree, about 4 degree above normal.
However, the night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped about 3 degree from Tuesday and settled at minus 2.5 degree.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, tourist resort of Kukernag improved and settled at 2 degree and 2.8 degree, respectively.
