Fresh snowfall in upper reaches in Kashmir

Srinagar: The upper reaches, including the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and health resort of Pahalgam, received fresh snowfall, while some areas in plains received light rain in Kashmir, where the minimum temperature stayed above freezing point.

Leh in Ladakh region was the coldest place in the region at minus 7.8 degree, followed by Gulmarg, which was colder than the border town of Kargil, at minus 5 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that light rain and snow would occur at isolated places during the next 24 hours in the state.

The border town of Kargil witnessed an improvement of about 12 degree from Wednesday and settled at minus 3 degree.

He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 3 degree and minus 11 degree, respectively.

Much to the delight of skiers and tourists, the ski slopes at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received fresh snowfall since late last night. However, sun came this afternoon bringing much needed relief from chilly weather conditions in the ski resort. The night temperature at the ski resort dipped over a degree from Wednesday and settled at minus 5 degree, which is over 2 degree above normal.

Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, received mixed rain and snow since later last night, though the night temperature improved about 3 degree from Wednesday and settled at minus 0.6 degree, about 6 degree above normal.

The upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on traditional yatra route, received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni also received moderate to heavy snowfall.

Another health resort of Sonmarg on Srinagar-Leh national highway, closed due to accumulation of snow, also received fresh snowfall since late last night, resulting in chilly weather conditions. Baltal, base camp of Amarnath yatra from the shortest yatra route, also received fresh snowfall.

After witnessing a dip in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly weather conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar. But, as the day progressed sun came out brining much delight to the people from chilly weather conditions. Against 3.5 degree recorded on Wednesday, the night temperature at summer capital dipped and settled at minus 1.7 degree.

The upper reaches in north Kashmir, including Keran, Karnah, Machil, Neeru and Sadhna and Razdan passes also received fresh snowfall.

The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, stayed constant at 2 degree from Wednesday.

The mercury at Kupwara in north Kashmir improved and settled at 1.3 degree recorded, against 0.4 degree recorded on Wednesday.
