Train service resumes after three days in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 14 : Train service resumed on Saturday after remaining suspended for three days for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a strike and protested against the killing of four youths and injuries to others during security force action on demonstrators protesting near an encounter site at Kulgam on April 11.
A soldier was martyred and two others were injured while militants managed to escape due to massive demonstrations in the area.
This was the 8th time train service was suspended in the valley for security reasons this month.
A senior railway official told UNI that train service was resumed this morning in the valley.
A fresh advisory was received from police to resume the train service after remaining suspended for three days in south Kashmir for security reasons. Therefore, he said, trains will run as per schedule on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region today.
Similarly, trains will also chug on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he added. However, train was running in north Kashmir on April 11 smoothly, when it was suspended in south Kashmir following encounter in Kulgam.
We are normally receiving heavy rush of passengers on Saturday, when people are going to their homes and also on Mondays, when they resume their normal activities, he said adding since there was a strike and holiday for the past few days the number of travelers will be less today.
We are acting on the advice of police and civil administration, railway official said adding the decision. However, to suspend train service was being taken for the security and safety of passengers and railway property.
Railway property has suffered massive damages in the past due to stone pelting and other violence during protests in the valley. However, railway remained first choice of people travelling between Baramulla in north to Banihal via south as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe.
Last year train service remained suspended for 50 times partially or fully in the valley. (UNI)
