Curfew imposed in Meghalaya
Shillong, June 1 :Curfew has been imposed in some areas of this Meghalaya following a clash that broke out last night between police and an irate mob at Motphran area.
The mob gathered at Motphran area till today early morning as they wanted to march to Them Ïew Mawlong after drivers of the Shillong Public Transport Service buses engaged in a scuffle with some persons residing at Them Ïew Mawlong (sweeper’s lane).
“Curfew has been imposed in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Cantonment Beat House from 4 a.m. today morning in view of the breakdown of law and order in Shillong City (Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas) following the violent clashes,” Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district,, Peter. S. Dkhar said.
He said the curfew was imposed to prevent every likelihood of serious breach of peace which may lead to act of arson, targeting vehicles causing loss of the life and property.
Internet services have been suspended to prevent spreading of misinformation in the social media.
A massive clash at Motphran in the city yesterday evening forced police to resort to the use of tear gas to disperse an angry mob after a bus conductor was allegedly assaulted by a group of people residing at Them Ïew Mawlong ( Harijan’s lane).
However, the situation took an ugly turned in the e night when an unruly mob attempted to march towards Them Mawlong and resorted to stone pelting at the police who were deployed in the area forcing the police to use tear gas to disperse the mob.
Police said a journalist and four were injured in the clash after they hit by stones in Motphran area and arrested three stone pelters. Police have also seized petrol bombs and other sharp weapons from their possession.
Meanwhile, police have tightened the security all over the city after miscreants set four vehicles on fire in four different locations at Motphran, Umsohson, Rynjah and Nongmynsong areas.
