Himank celebrates its Raising day
Leh, Dec 05 : Project Himank of Border Roads celebrated its 34th Raising day here today with much funfare. With the existence of the Project in the year 1985 the Project was entrusted with the vital task of construction of road infrastructure in the entire Ladakh. Project Himank has been at the forefront of the construction of roads, airfields and bridges both along the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control with China.
Chief Engineer, Brig Nitin K Sharma paid homage to the martyrs at the Himank Memorial on this momentous day which was followed by Chief Engineer’s Sainik Sammellan attended by the personnel of the Project.
Paying rich tributes to the unmatched saga of sacrifice, dedication and glory, the Chief Engineer highlighted the contribution of the GREF personals in taking forward the road development activities in border areas of Ladakh. He emphasized that ‘‘The Mountain Tamers’ as they are called have never been deterred by inhospitable terrain, hostile weather conditions and freezing temperatures in attaining the laid down goals and targets. The personals of the Project continue to hold their heads high in all spheres despite grave odds faced’’. He expressed unflinching confidence that the Project with focussed approach and sincere dedication will continue to play a pivotal role in developing road infrastructure and economic upliftment of Ladakh.
Chief Engineer said at present there is hardly any area of the Ladakh which has remained unconnected with the hinterland for which all credit must be given to this Project.
While referring to the achievements he said that the Project has created and is maintaining roads and airfields in the most hostile terrain. These roads according to Brig Sharma at an altitude of 10,000 feet to 19,300 feet’s and the construction and maintainence is itself a big challenge for the Project Himank.
While expressing his satisfaction, he said the project has rendered a yeoman’s service in ensuring access to strategic military areas as well as connecting people of ladakh which according to him has cemented a special bond between Himank and people of Ladakh.
It is important to mention that the Project Himank is presently looking after a road network of more than 2900 km of roads in the entire Ladakh . Important passes under Project Himank are Umling La 19,300 ft, Khardung La (18,380 ft), Chang La (17,300 ft), Marsimik la (18,300 ft), Tanglang La (17,552 ft). Besides the construction of roads the Project is looking after the Airfields. (KNS)
