Chandigarh, Leh and J&K Airports Closed Amid Indo-Pak Tensions

Five airports have been shut following the IAF jet crash in J&K’s Budgam on Wednesday, 27 February. Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu, Leh and Srinagar airports have been closed for civilian flights, PTI reported.

a global flight tracking service added that international flights that transit between Indian and Pakistani airspace were also being affected, and that many flights had now turned back or were looking for alternative routes.

Srinagar, Jammu and Leh airports were closed for civilian air traffic shortly after an IAF jet crashed in Budgam district and amid escalation of cross-Line of Control shelling between armies of India and Pakistan, PTI said. Chandigarh and Amritsar followed soon after.

ANI reported that Pakistan Air Force jets violated Indian airspace by entering border areas of Nowshera sector in J&K’s Rajouri district, and dropped bombs. However, no casualties have been reported yet.

“The civilian air traffic has been suspended temporarily in view of the emergency,” an official of the Airport Authority of India told PTI.

While the official did not specify the nature of the emergency, it is believed the step was taken in view of the IAF jet crashing in Budgam, PTI reported.

Indian airline Vistara also said that due to airspace restrictions, flights to and from Amritsar, Srinagar, Chandigarh and Jammu are currently on hold.

The flare up in the cross-LoC shelling, which was initiated by Pakistani troops in the early hours of Wednesday has also resulted in security forces and other establishments being put on high alert. (Agencies)
