For the first time in recorded history, Srinagar has logged a minimum temperature of 25.0 °C in June — the highest ever, according to Kashmir Weather Watch.
To put this into perspective, 25.0 °C is typically what the city experiences as a daytime high in late May. Currently, Srinagar’s average daytime temperature is 29.2 °C, and residents are waking to night-time conditions previously reserved for peak summer.
Nearby Pahalgam also shattered its previous record, registering its highest-ever June minimum temperature at 18.8 °C, as reported by Kashmir Weather Watch.
This extreme heat comes just before the anticipated arrival of a weather system over Jammu and Kashmir. Dense cloud cover and light to moderate monsoon showers are expected to sweep across many parts of the region within the next 48 hours. Some areas may also experience lightning and hail, according to forecasts from the same local weather authority.
These new overnight temperature highs are a significant concern. Night-time heatwaves prevent ambient cooling, reducing relief for residents and increasing health risks. At the same time, the incoming monsoon showers could offer temporary respite from the swelter, though sudden weather shifts may bring their own hazards.
