JDU President Shaheen Demands Immediate Waiver of KCC Loans for J&K Farmers

Janta Dal United (JDU) President for Jammu and Kashmir, G.M. Shaheen, on Friday strongly appealed to the Government of India to announce an immediate, unconditional and comprehensive waiver of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans for farmers in the Union Territory, citing severe agrarian distress caused by policy neglect, natural calamities and administrative apathy.

In a press statement, Shaheen said that farmers in Jammu and Kashmir are reeling under an unbearable debt burden after suffering repeated crop losses due to erratic weather conditions, rising input costs and declining returns. He asserted that under such circumstances, repayment of loans has become virtually impossible for cultivators.

Terming the recovery of loans from distressed farmers as unjust and insensitive, the JDU leader said the demand for repayments reflects a serious disconnect between policymaking and ground realities. “Forcing debt recovery from farmers whose livelihoods have been eroded is not governance but institutional cruelty,” he remarked.

Shaheen warned that continued indifference towards the farming community would deepen rural distress, push families into poverty and destabilize the rural economy with far-reaching social consequences. He urged the Union Government to rise above bureaucratic delays and announce a one-time KCC loan waiver as an emergency relief measure to restore dignity, financial stability and confidence among farmers.

He cautioned that failure to take decisive action would amount to a betrayal of the farming community and undermine the government’s stated commitment to farmer welfare.
