J&K Legislative Assembly’s Rules Committee Approves Minor Modifications to House Procedures

The Legislative Assembly’s Rules Committee on Tuesday gave its approval for the Speaker to implement necessary modifications to the existing Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

The meeting, chaired by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, was held in the Legislative Assembly complex in Jammu.

According to sources, there was consensus among committee members that minor adjustments to the rules were needed to ensure the smooth functioning of the Assembly.

Speaking to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), MLA Muzaffar Iqbal Khan from Rajouri, a member of the committee, confirmed that all members agreed that no major amendments were required, only minor modifications to facilitate the transaction of business in the House.

“The committee has given its approval to the Speaker to make these slight modifications in the existing rules,” Khan stated, adding that the Speaker had the authority to make these changes under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019.

BJP MLA RS Pathania also commented that the modifications would be necessary and aligned with the effective operation of the Legislative Assembly. "The Speaker has been empowered to make such adaptations after the passage of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act-2019," Pathania said.

It is important to note that the Peoples Democratic Party had previously described the modifications as an endorsement of the constitutional changes made on August 5, 2019. (KNO)
