India and Pakistan have entered a perilous phase of heightened hostilities, with both nations exchanging missile and drone strikes, leading to significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Background of the Escalation

The recent surge in tensions was ignited by a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. India attributes the attack to The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. 

In retaliation, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting nine sites within Pakistan, including areas in Kashmir and Punjab, which India claims were associated with terrorist infrastructure.

Civilian Impact and Casualties

Pakistan reports that the Indian strikes have resulted in 31 civilian deaths, including women and children, and 57 injuries. 

In response, Pakistan shelled Indian-controlled Kashmir, particularly affecting the Poonch and Uri regions, leading to additional civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Both nations have mobilized their military forces along the Line of Control (LoC), with civilians in border villages seeking refuge in bunkers or evacuating to safer areas.
