Agriculture Minister Javed Ahmad Dar on Saturday said the crop insurance scheme is likely to be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir within two months, while assuring relief to farmers affected by recent hailstorms after completion of damage surveys.
Speaking in Sopore amid widespread crop damage from repeated hailstorms, Dar said the bidding process for the scheme begins June 1 and is expected to conclude within one-and-a-half to two months. The premium will be shared by the Government of India, the J&K administration and farmers. Apples and saffron have now been included under the proposed insurance framework.
The minister said officials have already begun visiting affected areas for damage assessment, after which relief will be disbursed. On C-grade apples, he said the government is in touch with the Centre regarding a market intervention scheme, with NITI Aayog having visited J&K two months ago for discussions.
