Police on Monday arrested one of the accused, identified as Mudasir, in connection with the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Galwanpora, Budgam, within 24 hours of the incident. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
The girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered on Saturday. Her body was recovered from a field near her village on Sunday, following which police constituted an SIT. SSP Budgam K K Hari Prasad said preliminary investigation suggests the case is one of rape and murder.
A top police official said the accused will be ensured the harshest punishment for the crime. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and political, religious and civil society groups condemned the incident.
