New Delhi, Feb 26 : The Congress Working Committee, the highest decision-making body of the Congress, met on Wednesday morning to discuss the situation prevailing in Delhi following the violent clashes between the pro Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and anti CAA protesters, that left 18 people dead and several others injured.
Being held at the AICC headquarters, the meeting, is being chaired by party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi, is being chaired by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and attended by senior leaders of the party, including former Prime minister Manmohan Singh, former Defence Minister A K Antony, former Home Minister P Chidambaram and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad
The violence and riot-like situation in the north east Delhi for the last three days claimed 18 lives and injured hundreds.
According to party sources, Ms Gandhi had called Shakti Sinh Gohil, party in-charge of Delhi, to discuss the situation and decided to convene the meeting of its highest decision making body.
Sources said that the party will discuss the ongoing situation and the steps taken by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to control the violence.
The Congress also may pass a resolution to condemn the violence and suggests measures to build confidence among people.
On Tuesday, the Congress ‘urged’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Home Minister and the Delhi Chief Minister to ‘rise the occasion, leave aside your partisanship and views and become leaders not just of your parties but of society to restore peace and harmony’.
‘This is Gandhi’s, Nehru’s and Patel’s India, can any Indian accept this mindless violence,’ asked AICC communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. (Agencies)
