Lack of sustainable livelihood system in Tripura takes unemployment to alarming levels

Udaipur, Jul 2 : According to report of the current Economic Review of Tripura, the un-employment situation in the State has attained an alarming position.
Total job seekers in the Employment Exchanges of the State were 6,62,756 in March 2015, which further increased to 6,93,516 in March 2016 and to 7,16,550 in March 2017. Increase in population and consequent addition to the labour force continues to outstrip the demand resulting in rise of un-employment and under employment at an alarming rate in the State.
Dr. Arobindo Mahato, Coordinator, Department of Rural Studies, Tripura University (A Central University), said to UNI in an exclusive interaction that the main problem in Tripura is lack of long term development plan which includes low industrial development, lack of employment plan, problem in infrastructure development and problem in constituting a network between Tripura and other states of India.
A sustainable livelihood system is not being created in Tripura and it is accelerated due to lack in quality education. Quality education can help students to compete in national level entry into service examinations in addition to establishing themselves on the innovative won entrepreneurship venture, said Dr. Mahato to UNI. Quality education is possible if the government is able to employ quality teachers in addition to creating some minimum infrastructure. It is very essential to change the education system in Tripura for achieving sustainable livelihood and employment opportunities for the youths of Tripura.
The Economic Review of Tripura also informed that the maximum number of workers in Tripura were found engaged in retail trade followed by education, manufacturing, transport, accommodation, storage and other community and personal services in the non agricultural segment of the State. Low availability of infrastructure as indicated above has made the process of economic development extremely difficult.
Dr. Mahato said that the State has the strengths which are required to be explored for ensuring sustained economic development by increasing the gainful employment. There are three optical fiber e-gateways in India which are located in Bangalore, Bombay and Tripura. The area of Bangalore and Bombay were developed through the development of Information and Technology (IT) sector, now it is the turn of Tripura to develop through IT industries.
On the other hand, Tourism based industries have good potential in the State Tripura. Presently, promotion of tourism has been affected by inadequate infrastructure. The development of tourism related infrastructure facilities are essential and prerequisite for promotion of tourism in the State. It will give an opportunity to reduce the problem of unemployment in Tripura, said Dr. Mahato.
He also said availability of natural gas and rubber provide scope of setting up units for producing power, chemicals and fertilizer based industries in the State, it will give and boost the employment opportunity in Tripura.
