Concern over Karuna’s health condition, DMK cadres swarm hosp, security tightened
Chennai, Aug 7 : A day after Kauvery hospital announced that the health condition of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi declined, tens and hundreds of party cadres thronged the hospital, even as security arrangements have been tightened across the city.
With prayers on their lips, party cadres thronged the hospital since last evening, as Mr Karunanidhi’s health condition started declining, a hint to this effect was given by TNCC President Su Thiruvanarukkarasar on Monday afternoon and confirmed later by hospital in a bulletin.
DMK cadres from various parts of Tamil Nadu, including weeping women, swarmed the hospital, carrying party flags and photos of Mr Karunanidhi, with slogans ‘Ezhunthu Vaa’ (arise and come), renting the air.
As his health condition was a matter of grave concern, with doctors saying his response to the medical intervention over the next 24 hours would determine the prognosis, party cadres remained unmoved and even spent the night by sleeping in pavements near the hospital.
Meanwhile, all the close family members of Mr Karunanidhi, including his sons, DMK Working President M K Stalin and former Union Minister M K Alagiri, daughter and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi, DMK MLAs and functionaries visited the hospital.
Leaders of various parties including Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, TMC Leader G K Vasan, former TNCC Chief E V K S Elangovan, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and others visited the hospital to enquire about his health condition and wished him a speedy recovery.
A bulletin issued by Kauvery hospital last evening, where he has been admitted for the last 11 days, said he was on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support.
‘There has been decline in the medical condition of Mr Karunanidhi. Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age-related ailments’, it said, adding, Mr Karunanidhi was on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support.
His response to the medical interventions over the next 24 hours would determine the
prognosis, it said.
Mr Karunanidhi, who had fever and urinary tract infection after he underwent a procedure to change his tracheostomy tube, was shifted to the hospital shortly after midnight on July 28 following dip in blood pressure and his condition suffered a transient set back the next day.
His condition stabilised after medical management, before it declined since yesterday,causing concern among his family members and anxiety among the rank and file of the party.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the hospital with the deployment of additional police personnel, and also at various parts of the city.
