Cong slams BJP govt over foreigners’ names in updated NRC draft
Guwahati, Aug 7 : The Opposition Congress today slammed the BJP-led government in Assam over non-inclusion of names of genuine Indian citizens in the final draft of updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state, while the names of foreigners have crept in the list.
Addressing a press conference here, Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia said, “It has come to light that names of genuine Indian citizens, including family members of celebrated freedom fighters, ex-President of our country and ex-CM of our state, have not figured in the final draft NRC. These people has submitted all relevant documents, yet their names were not included.”
“On the other hand, names of people declared foreigners or whose cases are pending before the Foreigners’ Tribunal have made it into the final draft NRC. We demand the government to deal seriously with such cases,” he added.
He pointed that a multi-level checks and cross-check procedure was adopted for inclusion of names in NRC and if foreigners still managed to enroll themselves, the government should look into the matter with gravity.
Referring to instances of genuine Indian citizens failing to apply for registration in the NRC due to various reasons, Saikia said, “We want clarity from the government on behalf of these people. The government should make it clear whether all citizens of the state should compulsorily apply for inclusion in NRC and if so, how can those who did not do it earlier apply now.”
Saikia further said the Congress will always claim credit for the updated NRC as the process was started during Congress’ tenure in the Centre and state.
“For the sake of our state, we want an error-free NRC, which has name of no foreigners,” he added.
