A major corruption scandal has rocked the Custodian Department of Jammu and Kashmir, with allegations of illegal property allotments to favored individuals, flouting established rules and regulations.
The scandal, which has sent shockwaves through the region, involves some department officials using their influence to allocate government land and properties to select individuals, who later exploited them for personal business purposes.
Sources have revealed that several properties in LD Colony, Rawalpora, Srinagar, have been allotted under the names of a single family. In one case, Liaqat Ali Mufti, a bank manager, was given Custodian plot number 2, while his wife, also a bank manager, was allotted plot number 14 in the same area.
The family additionally owns 1 kanal and 8 marlas of land in the same locality. Alarmingly, their son, Engineer Nasir Ali Mufti, is reported to be illegally occupying Custodian plot number 28, on which he has established unauthorized possession. Despite multiple properties being allocated or occupied by this family, no action has been taken by the department.
In another startling case, Bashir Ahmed Baba, a resident of Charar-e-Sharif, Budgam, has been illegally occupying a two-story residential building in Barzullah, which is registered under the Custodian Department’s name, for almost 22 years, without any formal allotment. Despite the lack of an official allotment, Baba pays a nominal rent of Rs 1300 and rents out the property for Rs 30,000 per month, profiting from the unauthorized use. Even after this misuse of property was exposed, the department’s officers and staff have remained silent and failed to take any action.
Furthermore, sources suggest that Bashir Ahmed Baba has had a plot allotted in the name of his son, Aqib Bashir, in LD Colony, along with an additional kanal of land in the same area. In a further twist, Baba has also had a plot (number 3) allotted to his brother, Shaukat Ahmed Baba, raising questions about the repeated favoritism shown to these two families.
Local residents and concerned citizens are now questioning why these two families continue to receive preferential treatment from the Custodian Department.
The public is demanding that the department’s officials come forward and present all the facts to ensure accountability and transparency. This scandal has cast a shadow over the administration’s effectiveness and has sparked widespread public condemnation.
The scandal highlights the extent of corruption within the Custodian Department, where government properties, intended for public use, have been misappropriated for personal gain. It has become clear that there is a pressing need for systemic reforms within the department to prevent further misuse of public resources and to ensure that transparency and accountability are upheld.
As the investigation into this case continues, the public is closely watching to see if any real action will be taken to address these serious allegations and to restore trust in the Custodian Department.
