Kashmir Sizzles as Heatwave Persists, Jammu Sees Unusual Dip

Kashmir Valley continues to reel under an intense heatwave, with maximum temperatures across several areas soaring well above normal, according to data compiled by independent weather forecaster Kashmir Weather.

Srinagar recorded a high of 34.5°C on Sunday, 4.9°C above the seasonal average. Qazigund reported 33.6°C, a staggering 6.1°C above normal, while the scenic hill station of Pahalgam recorded 30.2°C, 5.5°C higher than usual. Kupwara and Kokernag also saw abnormally high temperatures of 34.2°C and 33.6°C respectively. Even Gulmarg, typically cooler, registered 25.0°C—3.0°C above the norm.

In contrast, parts of the Jammu region witnessed a drop in daytime temperatures. Jammu city recorded 32.3°C, which is 3.7°C below normal for this time of year. Katra also remained cooler at 30.2°C, 2.7°C below the average. However, Banihal and Batote remained slightly above normal, while Bhaderwah saw a marginal decline.

Meanwhile, Ladakh recorded relatively moderate temperatures, with Leh at 28.1°C and Kargil reaching 30.8°C.

The persistently high temperatures in the Valley come amid growing concerns over climate variability and its impact on agriculture, especially during the critical paddy transplant season.
