Ghulam Ali Khatana Shares Journey from Marginalized Roots to Parliament
Ghulam Ali Khatana, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, said his political journey has been driven by a commitment to represent marginalized communities of Jammu and Kashmir, as he recounted his rise from a difficult childhood during an interview with United News Service.
Khatana alleged that his family faced discrimination under the rule of the National Conference, claiming their landholdings were taken away after they resisted political pressure. He said these early experiences shaped his resolve to fight for the rights of oppressed sections, including Gujjars, Bakarwals and other Scheduled Tribes.
Highlighting his political journey, Khatana said he remained active in student movements and later associated with regional politics before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, which he described as a platform to serve people at the national level. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for focusing on the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking on the post-2019 scenario, the MP said the Union Territory has witnessed visible development and improved security. However, he added that more could have been done by previous governments to address public issues.
Khatana also raised concerns regarding media-related issues in Kashmir, stating that these matters would be taken up with the government and the Lieutenant Governor’s administration.
He reiterated his commitment to remain connected with the people and continue advocating for the poor and marginalized sections across Jammu and Kashmir.
