NC Faces Internal Uproar; Workers Reject ‘Imposed’ Leadership in Bandipora

The appointment of Dr Zahoor as District President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) in Bandipora has sparked sharp divisions within the party, exposing internal rifts between opposing factions.
Party insiders defended the decision, asserting that Dr Zahoor is a long-time party worker associated with the NC since 2002. They said he has served as a basic member, delegate, and currently works as an organiser for the Bandipora constituency. “He is not an outsider. His appointment has been made by the party high command after due consultation with senior leadership,” a source said, dismissing criticism as “misplaced.”
Supporters further argued that a party with a strong organisational structure and constitution would not elevate an unfamiliar face to such a key position. They maintained that Dr Zahoor enjoys a credible grassroots presence in the district.
However, the move has drawn strong opposition from another faction within the party. On Monday, senior NC leader Jalal Akbar Lone led a protest against the appointment, with party workers openly rejecting the decision.
“We do not accept the newly appointed District President. Local leadership, especially from Sonawari, was not taken into confidence,” protesting workers said, alleging lack of consultation and calling the move “arbitrary.”
Sources indicated that the protest has backing from some senior leaders, with reports suggesting that at least two legislators are unhappy and may consider further steps if their concerns are not addressed.
The controversy highlights growing internal discontent within the NC’s Bandipora unit, even as the party leadership has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
