Twenty sheep belonging to a shepherd from Seer Tral died under suspected toxic conditions late Thursday night in the Kehlil area of Tral, dealing a major financial blow to the livestock owner.
The sheep, belonging to Bilal Ahmad, were reportedly being moved towards higher grazing grounds when they collapsed after apparently grazing on grass suspected to be contaminated with pesticides. The exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed.
The incident comes less than two months after a similar case in Yarigund, Kawoosa, Budgam district, where eight sheep died under suspected toxic conditions on April 26, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation.
Livestock owners have called for a thorough probe into the use of chemicals in grazing areas and for assistance to the affected shepherd.
