Nestled high in the mountains of Gool in Ramban, Kataji Sar is an unspoiled alpine lake perched at an altitude of about 3,259 metres (10,692 feet). Hidden from the mainstream tourist circuit, the lake offers pristine beauty, tranquil surroundings and panoramic Himalayan views, making it one of the most promising offbeat trekking destinations in the Chenab Valley.
The trek to Kataji Sar begins from Gool Market and stretches around 11 to 13 kilometres, winding through dense forests, alpine meadows, grassy slopes and rocky ridges. Along the route, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of lush valleys, colourful wildflowers, grazing livestock and snow-capped peaks, while mountain streams and birdsong enhance the experience.
Located about five kilometres from Ramakunda, the lake lies within the scenic high-altitude landscape connecting Ramban and Reasi districts. During summer, its crystal-clear waters mirror the surrounding mountains, while the nearby pastures remain blanketed in snow through winter before turning lush green with the changing season.
Unlike many commercial tourist destinations, Kataji Sar has retained its untouched charm. The region's ecological richness remains largely intact, with seasonal visits by Gujjar and Bakerwal shepherds adding to its cultural and pastoral character. The surrounding meadows support diverse alpine flora and provide habitat for several bird and wildlife species, making the area equally attractive for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
The moderately challenging trek is ideal for experienced hikers as well as physically fit beginners. Open grasslands around the lake also offer excellent camping opportunities beneath clear mountain skies, providing visitors with an immersive wilderness experience far removed from urban life.
Despite its immense tourism potential, the area lacks essential infrastructure such as marked trails, shelters, information boards and waste management facilities. Thoughtfully planned, eco-friendly development could transform Kataji Sar into a model destination for sustainable mountain tourism while generating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
However, preserving the lake's fragile alpine ecosystem must remain the foremost priority. Responsible tourism practices—including avoiding littering, protecting biodiversity and respecting local traditions—are essential to ensuring that the lake's pristine environment remains undisturbed.
With community-led tourism, guided trekking, eco-friendly camping and conservation-focused promotion, Kataji Sar has the potential to emerge as one of Jammu and Kashmir's finest eco-tourism destinations.
