Himalayan Pearl, ISCA Lead Effort to Position Gulmarg on Astro-Tourism Map

In a unique blend of science, nature and tourism promotion, the Innovative Science Communicators Association (ISCA), in collaboration with the Office of the Assistant Director Tourism, Gulmarg, and Himalayan Pearl Luxury Resort, organised a public outreach programme on astronomy at the scenic Helipad Centre in Gulmarg.

The initiative aimed at promoting Gulmarg and Kashmir as a promising destination for astro-tourism while fostering scientific awareness among students and visitors.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from school students, tourist guides and officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, reflecting growing institutional interest in diversifying tourism through science-based experiences.

A panel of experts addressed the gathering, including astrophysicist Dr Khurshid Rather, who spoke about cosmic phenomena and the potential of Kashmir for astronomical observation and research. Science communicator Muneer Wani engaged the audience through simple explanations and live demonstrations. Renowned astrophotographer Ajay Talwar joined the event online and highlighted the global appeal of astro-photography, stressing the value of Gulmarg’s pristine night skies. Scientist Dr Niruj Mohan also addressed participants virtually, speaking about contemporary scientific research and the need to nurture scientific temperament among youth.

One of the major highlights of the programme was a live sky-watching session conducted by Muneer Wani using a 12-inch reflector telescope. Students observed celestial objects, including constellations, distant galaxies and planets such as Jupiter, many experiencing telescope-based observation for the first time.

The event turned highly interactive as students asked questions on physics, astrophysics, planetary science, space exploration and astro-photography. Speakers encouraged critical thinking and also spoke about career opportunities in science and astronomy.

Special emphasis was laid on the potential of astro-tourism in Kashmir. Experts and organisers pointed to Gulmarg’s high altitude, minimal light pollution and clear skies as key advantages that make it ideal for stargazing events, astronomy camps and international astro-tourism initiatives. Tourist guides and officials were also sensitised to the concept as a value addition to conventional tourism.

The collaboration between ISCA, the Tourism Department and Himalayan Pearl Luxury Resort was appreciated as a model partnership demonstrating how science communication, tourism development and hospitality can come together to create meaningful educational experiences.

Organisers expressed gratitude to participating institutions, speakers, students and tourism officials, and reaffirmed their commitment to holding more such initiatives to inspire young minds and position Kashmir as a leading hub for astronomy education and astro-tourism.
