In a significant action against narcotic crop cultivation, Anantnag Police on Wednesday destroyed an illicit opium poppy plantation in the Achabal area and registered a case against the accused, officials said.
Acting on specific intelligence received through the Beat Officer, a police team from Police Station Achabal — accompanied by an Executive Magistrate and Agriculture Department officials — conducted a spot inspection at Pushroo, Achabal, where a local resident had allegedly cultivated opium poppy on nearly one marla of land.
Upon verification, the illegal crop was found growing on the site and was destroyed on the spot in accordance with legal procedures. The accused has been identified as Ghulam Rasool Mir, son of Mohammad Abdullah Mir, a resident of Pushroo Achabal.
FIR No. 47/2026 has been registered at Police Station Achabal under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway.
Anantnag Police reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating narcotic crop cultivation and drug-related activities across the district. The police also appealed to the public to share information regarding cultivation, trafficking or abuse of narcotic substances, emphasising that community cooperation is vital for building a drug-free society.
