Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, on Saturday announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Zil Hijjah has been sighted in Kashmir, following which Eid-ul-Adha will be celebrated across the Valley on May 27.
The announcement came after reports of moon sighting were received from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. With the confirmation, Muslims in Kashmir will observe Eid-ul-Adha on Tuesday, May 27.
Several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey and Tunisia, also confirmed sighting of the moon and announced Eid-ul-Adha on May 27.
In Saudi Arabia, the moon sighting marked the beginning of Zil Hijjah, with the Day of Arafah to be observed on May 26 and Eid-ul-Adha on May 27.
Pakistan too confirmed sighting of the crescent moon, while religious authorities in Oman declared Eid on May 27 after moon sighting reports were verified.
Meanwhile, India officially announced that the moon was not sighted in several regions, leading many parts of the country to observe Eid-ul-Adha on May 28. Brunei also announced Eid on May 28 after no confirmed moon sighting.
The differing dates are based on local moon sighting practices followed by various countries and religious authorities.
