A recent study has revealed that the famed Thajiwas Glacier in Sonamarg has receded by nearly 95 percent, raising serious concerns among environmental experts about the escalating impact of climate change in the Himalayan region.
Once a major tourist draw and one of Kashmir's most picturesque landmarks, the glacier has witnessed an alarming decline over the years, which experts attribute to rising temperatures, reduced snowfall and shifting weather patterns linked to global climate change.
Researchers said the drastic loss highlights the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan glaciers and warned that continued shrinking could have far-reaching effects on water availability, biodiversity and the tourism-dependent local economy.
The findings have renewed calls for immediate climate action, stricter environmental safeguards and greater public awareness, with experts describing the study as a wake-up call for policymakers, conservationists and citizens to protect the Valley's natural heritage.
