MeT Warns of Flashfloods, Landslides in J&K; Advises Public to Stay Alert

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast generally dry weather during forenoon and afternoon hours from June 26 to 29, with spells of light rain, brief thundershowers and gusty winds expected at scattered places towards late afternoon and evening. Pre-monsoon showers are also likely in the plains of Jammu and adjoining areas mainly during late night and morning hours during the same period.

From June 30 to July 3, fresh spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers with brief intense heavy showers, thunder and gusty winds are expected at many places across Jammu and Kashmir.

The MeT department has issued an advisory urging people to stay away from loose structures, electric poles, wires and old trees, and to suspend boating and Shikara riding during thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Orchard spray has been recommended during early morning hours only.

The department has also warned of the possibility of hailstorms at isolated places during late afternoon hours, and cautioned that brief intense heavy showers may trigger flashfloods and landslides at isolated places. Temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas is expected from June 30 onwards.

The public has been advised to stay away from nullahs, streams and landslide-prone areas.
