Under construction Farakka Bridge collapsed, two killed and three injured in Malda
Farakka, Feb 17: Two persons were killed and three others were wounded critically when a portion of an under-construction bridge on Farakka barrage collapsed in West Bengal’s Malda district, according to local superintended police Aloke Rajoria.
The mishap happened on Sunday night at the barrage site at Baishnabnagar, Malda. One of the injured has been taken to a specialised medical facility in Kolkata. Mr Rajoria said the bridge was being constructed jointly by a Chinese
firm and the National Highways Authority of India. The PMO office in New Delhi wanted details of the mishap and asked Malda North MP Khagen Murmu to visit the site and send report soonest. Unformed report said the death toll in the mishap was three.
Mr Rajoria said the details of the accident and reasons could be found after inquiries. Both the NHAI and local police began inquiries separately. The under-construction bridge, for which work has been started since
last year, was supposed to be completed by December 2021. Several labourers had been trapped under the rubble and recused mission was still on.
Official sources said the dead included a 36-year-old junior engineer Srinivas, and a worker Sachin Pratap. Seven labourers were rescued after the girder, being installed by a crane between pillar number one and two came down.
