JDU’s G.M. Shaheen Slams Govt Over Severe Power Cuts, Says Kashmir ‘Pushed Into Darkness’ Amid Harsh Winter

Janta Dal (United) J&K President G.M. Shaheen on Friday issued a strong statement criticizing the government for what he described as “relentless and unjustifiable electricity curtailments” across Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in rural areas of the Valley, during the peak of winter.

Shaheen accused the administration of failing in its fundamental duty to ensure essential services for citizens.

“We are not asking for charity or free electricity. We are demanding what any responsible government is obliged to provide — a stable and regular power supply,” he said. “At a time when the cold is at its harshest, denying people electricity amounts to administrative negligence.”

Issuing a sharp warning to the NC-led government, Shaheen said that any administration that is unable to address such a basic hardship has “lost its moral authority to govern.”

“If the Omar Abdullah government continues to remain indifferent to the suffering of the people, it should step aside,” he added, praising Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for his effective handling of UT affairs in recent years.

The JDU President said the current power crisis has gone beyond inconvenience and has now turned into measurable public distress. In Kashmir’s extreme winter conditions, he said, electricity is not merely a service but an “existential necessity.”

Shaheen demanded immediate and decisive action from the government, asserting that public patience is rapidly running out.
