A court in Bandipora on Thursday granted bail to under-trial accused Aiyaz Ahmad Sofi in a 2017 murder case, citing prolonged incarceration of nearly eight years and violation of the right to a speedy trial.
The order was passed by the Court of Additional District & Sessions Judge, Sumbal, Mir Wajahat, in connection with FIR No. 22/2017 registered at Police Station Hajin under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.
The court noted that a substantial portion of the prosecution evidence has already been recorded and observed that continued detention without timely trial progression was unjustified.
Sofi, a resident of Hajin, had been lodged at District Jail Kot Bhalwal in Jammu. He is among three accused in the case and the first to be granted bail.
The case relates to the killing of Abdul Rashid Parray alias Billa. The court granted relief considering the duration of custody and the stage of the trial.
