PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday criticised the registration of an FIR over alleged remarks made during the funeral of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sheikh Ghulam Hassan, terming it part of a “witch hunt” atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters in Kulgam, Mehbooba said that while some individuals attending the last rites may have made statements that “some people may not have liked,” there was “nothing anti-national” in the speeches delivered during the funeral.
She urged the Union Territory administration and Lieutenant Governor to stop what she described as a crackdown on dissenting voices.
Drawing a comparison, Mehbooba said that while RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale had advocated dialogue with Pakistan, people associated with Jamaat-e-Islami were being targeted despite the organisation’s contribution to education through schools and social work.
The PDP chief also raised a humanitarian concern involving a resident of Noorabad in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Referring to Muhammad Jahangir Malik of Noorabad, Mehbooba alleged that Army personnel forcibly took him towards a forest and cave area against his will, where he was later attacked by a bear.
She appealed to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kulgam, to investigate the matter thoroughly and ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
Mehbooba said such allegations required an impartial probe and accountability to ensure justice.
