The body of a Srinagar man who went missing while attempting to rescue his teenage son from the Lidder River near Pahalgam was recovered on Friday, six days after the tragic incident.
The deceased has been identified as Muhammad Ashraf Mir (42), a resident of Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar. His body was retrieved from the Amad, Aishmuqam area following an extensive multi-agency search operation along various stretches of the river.
Mir had gone missing on Sunday after he entered the Lidder River near Langanbal, around eight kilometres downstream of Pahalgam, in a desperate bid to save his teenage son Fahad during a family outing. The boy survived the incident.
A massive search operation was launched immediately after Mir was reported missing, involving personnel from the SDRF, NDRF, Police, Army, Civil Defence volunteers and local residents, who combed the river downstream from the spot where he was last seen.
Officials said investigation has been initiated and the body will be handed over to the family after completion of necessary legal formalities.
