Srinagar records coldest night of the winter

The harsh Chillai-Kalan period tightened its grip across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Thursday, with several places recording the lowest temperatures of the season. Srinagar city witnessed its coldest night of the winter so far as the mercury plunged to minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, intensifying the ongoing cold wave conditions across the region.

 

According to data compiled by Kashmir Weather, sub-zero temperatures were recorded across most parts of the Kashmir Valley. Qazigund registered a minimum of –5.4°C, while Pahalgam recorded –8.6°C. Tourist resort Gulmarg shivered at –9.2°C, and Sonamarg emerged as one of the coldest places in the Valley with a low of –9.8°C. Srinagar Airport recorded –6.8°C, while Pulwama also saw temperatures dip to –6.8°C. Shopian recorded –7.8°C, Anantnag –6.3°C, and Baramulla –5.3°C. Other areas including Kupwara, Budgam, Bandipora, Pampore, Ganderbal, and Awantipora also remained well below freezing.

 

In the Jammu region, cold conditions prevailed in higher reaches, while plains experienced relatively milder temperatures. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 7.1°C, while Jammu Airport registered 7.7°C. Bhaderwah dipped below freezing at –3.4°C, and Rajouri recorded –1.0°C. Banihal, Batote, Katra, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, Poonch, and Kishtwar reported minimum temperatures ranging between 1°C and 4°C.

 

The cold wave was most severe in Ladakh, where extreme sub-zero temperatures continued to prevail. Drass once again emerged as the coldest place, recording a bone-chilling –24.7°C. Nyoma recorded –20.1°C, Hanle –16.9°C, Padum –17.2°C, Tangste –17.8°C, and Leh –14.6°C. Kargil registered –13.4°C, while Nubra Valley recorded –12.7°C.

 

People across the region have been advised to take necessary precautions as the cold wave is expected to persist in the coming days.
