The Gulmarg Gondola will remain suspended for around a week after a technical fault developed in the primary gearbox at the Kondori station, Director Tourism Kashmir Syed Qamar Sajad said on Tuesday, adding that all tourists stranded mid-air have been evacuated safely.

Six specialised rescue teams were deployed across the Gondola line in coordination with J&K Police and SDRF to carry out vertical rescue operations. The damaged gearbox weighs around 3.6 tonnes and replacing it with a spare unit is expected to take five to seven days. An internal technical committee has also been constituted to investigate the cause of the fault.

"There will be no compromise on safety and security," Director Qamar said, adding that operations will resume only after restoration work is fully completed.
